A pool of 27 young athletes have been earmarked and added to the Junior national athletic pool by the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka (AASL) which will be the core group that the selectors will look to pick the potential representatives for the many junior international competitions that are scheduled for next year.
Sri Lankan junior athletes will be involved in plenty of international competition in what looks to be a busy year for the young athletes and the coaches alike. AASL is hoping to host the Junior SAF games championship at Sugathadasa Stadium in May next year with the Class A track set to be re-laid by the beginning of February at the currently dysfunctional track and field hub of the country. This meet will act as an important precursor for the Junior Asian Athletic Championship scheduled to be held in June in Gifu, Japan. The main aim of all the aspiring junior athletes undoubtedly will be to qualify for the 3rd Summer Youth Olympic Games which will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina from the 6th to 18th of October 2018.

17 male and 10 female athletes have been included in the Junior Athletic Pool which has been last revised on the 25th of October 2017. High jumper Tharindu Dasun, Pole Vaulter Napthali Joyson and female Long Jumper N Abeyrathne are the only field athletes in the pool which is otherwise dominated by track athletes.
Speaking to ThePapare.com President of the AASL Gen. Palitha Fernando added that the association strongly believes that both male and female 4X400m relay teams are capable of winning distinction considering the performances the individual athletes have shown and would closely monitor the athletes picked for the pool.
