St. Joseph’s College, Colombo and Mahamaya girls schools Kandy successfully retained their Championship trophy for the 12th consecutive time at the Sri Lanka Schools Championships 2015 today.
The event took place from 18/06/15 – 21/06/15 at the Sugadathasa Swimming Complex, testing the limits and abilities of over 500 swimmers from more than 25 schools.
By winning the Junior & Senior championship trophies, St. Joseph’s College emerged as the overall champions in the Boys category with 584.5 points. The Under-17 swim team of the school also contributed towards their victory by emerging champions in their respective category. The team’s captain Shachin Perera expressed his sincere gratitude to their rector Rev.Fr. Travis Gabriel, their coaches Mr.Ruwan Manawadu, Mr.Kasun Rupasinghe, Mr.Venura Sorris and Mr. Jeewan Tharanga for the never-ending support.
The Swimming Team of Mahamaya College, Kandy deserves greater appreciation. They not only emerged as Champions in the Junior & Senior Girls Category but also came first in the Under 15, 17 & 19 Championships surpassing all the leading girls’ schools in Colombo. This is the 17th consecutive victory for the school as the overall champions in the Girls category. The team thanked the Principal, Vice principal, teachers-in-charge of Mahamaya College for their continuous support. They also dedicated their victory to their coach Mr.U.H.Sugath who has been their pillar of support throughout the years.
It is noteworthy that Visakha Vidyala and Royal College managed to emerged as the Runners- up in the Girls overall championship and the Boys overall championship respectively. Both schools were also placed second in the Senior & Junior Championships. But in the Under-19 Boys Championships, S. Thomas College, Mount Lavinia, out-ran both Josephian and Royalist swimmers as secured their position as champions in the Under-19 Boys category after 9 years.
Swimmers were also acknowledged for their individual contribution. K.A. Hiruni Sanjana Perera of Harischandra College and Imesh Chathuranga of D.S.Senanayake College won the Under-15 Girls Individual Championship and Under-17 Boys Individual Championship respectively, earning 40 points each by breaking 2 records.
Yahiya Jaffer of Royal College, Colombo emerged as the champion the in the Under-19 Boys Individual Championship Category for setting a new record. The swimmer conveyed his sincere gratitude to his trainers, career-coaches and past swimmers of Royal College. He also wished to thank his parents for their continuous love, support and positive encouragement throughout his swimming career.
It should not be forgotten that the event also appreciated the participation of divers in Sri Lankan Schools. Royal College, Colombo and Bishops College showed more competence in the diving arena by winning the Junior Championship Trophies. Dulanjana Pranandhu and Shehan Pieris of Royal College won the Under-17 & Under-19 Boys Diving Individual Championships respectively. Niwanka Nanayakkara of Bishop’s College emerged as champion in the Under-17 Girls Individual Diving Championship.
