St. Joseph’s College right-handed batsman, Jehan Daniel smashed a brilliant century for Western Province North against Northern Province on day one in their SLC Super 19 Provincial Tournament 2016 match which started at Thurstan grounds on Thursday.
Two other games at Moors grounds and MCA grounds were also commenced today. After being sent into bat first, Western Province North amassed 306 for 8 in 56 overs before declaring their innings.
Anandian left-handed batsman Kavish kaAnjula gave a blistering start smashing 10 fours during his electric 35-ball knock of 49 while his school-mate, Nipun Haggalla crashed 73 off 99 balls but the best knock of the day came from Daniel’s bat.
The 17-year old Daniel made 104 in 101 deliveries with 7 fours and 3 sixes and was involved in a massive 153-run stand for the 5th wicket with Haggalla. Fast-bowler G Ratheeshan and left-arm spinner V Jathushan shared 7 wickets for the Northerners.
In reply, Northern Province made a formidable 117 for 3 wickets at close of play. Left-handed opening batsman M Nithushan remained unbeaten on 52 from 154 balls with 7 fours. According to the rules of the tournament, Northern Province only have another 15 overs in the first innings to bat on day two.

Southern Province vs Eastern Province
After being bowled out for 214, Southern Province came back strongly to take 6 wickets at stumps on day one against Eastern Province at Moors grounds.
Eastern Province won the toss and had no hesitation to bowl first on a dry surface. The Southerners lost half of their side for only 76 runs but two valiant knocks by skipper Navindu Nirmal and Chathura Milan guided them to a formidable score.
St. Aloysius’ College wicket-keeper batsman Nirmal made an unbeaten 47 from 91 balls while No.7 batsman Milan made 3 sixes and 3 fours during his 66-ball 63. Both of them were also involved in a gritty 90-run stand for the 6th wicket. Left-arm spinner Naveen Gunawardene picked up 4 wickets for Easterners.
In reply, Eastern Province innings was once again built around De Mazenod College batsman Lasith Crosspulle as he made a patient 42 off 115 to stay at the crease when the umpires raised stumps on day one with his team at dire straits on 103 for 6. Off-spinner Dilum Sudeera was the pick of the bowlers grabbing 3 for 23.

North Western Province vs Uva Province
Wanitha Wanninayake and Nipun Dhananjaya slammed half-tons to give major honours on day one to North Western Province against Uva Province in their game at MCA grounds.
After being invited to bat first, North Westerners posted a commendable 253 on the score board. Wanitha Wanninayake and Nipun Dhananjaya made 73 and 67 respectively to take their team to a winning position after losing five of their top batsmen for just 99 runs. Left-arm spinner Avindu Theekshana picked up 4 scalps for Uva Province.
The lads from Uva Province were once again let down by their batsmen as they were struggling on 127 for 6 at stumps. Kaveen Bandara was the chief destroyer taking 3 wickets while Ravindu Sanjana top-scored for Uva with 33.

All three matches will be continued tomorrow (29th April) for second day’s play while the game between Central Province vs Western Province South has been rescheduled to 29th and 30th April at Surrey Village grounds.
