Jayasinghe and Piumila champions at All Island Ranking Championship

B.N.B.Jayasinghe and Hansani Piumila won the Open Singles Championship in the Chief Minister of Western Province, Isuru Devaappriya Challenge Trophy, Open All Island Ranking Table Tennis Championship, at the S.Thomas’ College Indoor Sports Complex.

Piumila defeated Ishara Madurangi of Stag Table Tennis Academy, in a thrilling 7 sets, in the Women’s Open Singles final.

Piumila won the first two sets in a tight 11-9, 11-9 score line but Madurangi roared back to win the next three sets 9-11, 4-11 and 4-11. With the championship at stake Piumila recovered to win the 6th set 11-5 and force the match into a deciding 7th set. In the decider Madurangi looked as if she was running away with the victory, getting a 5 point lead but the youngster showed real character to wipe off the lead and win 11-8.

In the Men’s Open Singles Final Jayasinghe had it easy, winning against Chameera Ginige in 5 sets.

It was a close first set where Jayasinghe won 11-9 but he dominated the next two sets winning 11-5 and 11-2. With a set away from defeat Ginige won the 4th set 9-11 but was unable to mount a comeback as Jayasinghe won the 5th set 11-7.

Prasad De Silva of Vidyartha College, Kandy won the Boys’ U21 Singles Championship defeating Supuna Warusavithana, of Ananda College.

It was a ding-dong battle in the opening three sets with Warusavithana winning the 1st and 3rd sets 7-11 and 9-11. De Silva won the 2nd set 11-6 and cruised through to victory winning the 4th and 5th sets 11-7 and 11-6 respectively.

Nuwani Navodya defeated Muthumali Priyadarshani in 4 sets to win the Girls’ U21 Singles Championship.

Navodya won the opening set 11-9 and Priyadarshani won the next 5-11. The next two sets were comfortable wins for Navodya 11-7 and 11-3 on her way to the championship.

Sri Lanka ranked no.1 Udaya Ranasinghe won the Boys’ U18 Singles Championship in straight sets against Krishan Wickramarathne, 14-12, 11-8 and 11-8.

Helitha avenge last week’s loss while Thanushi defeat Sayuri

Imasha De Silva won the Girls’ U18 Singles championship in 4 sets against Hansani Piumila. De Silva won the first set 11-7 but Piumila made it a set a piece winning the 2nd 8-11. De Silva however won the next two sets 11-7 and 11-6.
