The Janaka Bogollagama Junior Ranking Tennis tournament which commenced on the 7th of December came to a close on the 14th of December.
The tournament which was worked off at the Kurunegala Tennis Club attracted many talented young players from many countries who were eager to finish their respective seasons on a high.
This tournament which has gone onto achieve a B grade status saw contestants participating in a host of events that ranged from the under 7 age group to the under 18 age group.
The experienced Royalist and the number one seed for the under 18 event Dhanushka Abeywardena stole the lime light as he secured convincing victories in the boys under 18 singles and doubles events. Abeywardena’s power and speed was unmatchable as he breezed through all his matches with great poise and confidence. He defeated Joshua Moraes with a scoreline of 6-0 6-1 in the singles finals and went onto partner Moraes to win the doubles with a scoreline of 6-2 6-1.
Pravin Steel who was the number one seed in the under 14 event played exceptionally well throughout the course of the tournament. He won the under 14 boys singles finals against Ravindu Weerasinghe in a very close match that saw both players playing scintillating tennis. He completed a double when he partnered Nadun Senadheera to win the under 14 doubles event. He also competed with his seniors in the u-16 category but he was unfortunate to lose out to Naadir Nazar in the finals.
