The fourth and the penultimate day of the 33rd All Island School Games Athletic Championship concluded today(14th) at the Diyagama Mahinda Rajapakshe Stadium.
With heavy thunder showers from morning, there was doubt whether the events could be conducted, as the rains threatened the commencement of the proceedings but eventually eased out to the relief of many.
Pole Vault clean swept by Jaffna
Mahajana College Jaffna has presented the country with the best female Pole Vaulter to ever take up the pole in Anitha Jegathisweren. Anitha routinely makes headlines every time she competes in the event, renewing the national record and soaring to heights never achieved by any Sri Lankan. If we are to go by the final results of the U20 Girls Pole Vault at the All Island School Games, it seems like the pole has been passed onto fellow athletes from the area to keep the legacy alive as the top 04 places of the U20 Girls Pole Vault competition was secured by athletes hailing from the northern peninsula. C. Herina of Mahajana College Jaffna, clinched gold in the event clearing a height of 3.10m. She is a cousin of the national record holder Anitha and also trains under the watchful eyes of coach C. Subashkaran. S. Shankavy of Chavakasheri Hindu College Jaffna was placed second while her school mate N. Dakshitha was placed third. T. Thivya of Palali Central College was placed fourth, asserting the dominance the athletes from the northern peninsula had in the event.

Walala A Rathnayake College big winners in the 800m
Under 16, 18 and 20 800m finals were worked out today at the Diyagama race track and Walala A. Rathnayake sports school dominated proceedings, securing a podium finish in every race. H. Skarunarathne of Walala A Rathnayake College denied Benedictine Ravishka Indrajith of a second gold when he won the Boy’s U18 800 clocking 1:57.90 while the Benedictine had to be satisfied with a silver with a time of 1:58.31 K. Lakmal of St. Joseph Vaz Wennapuwa had to be satisfied with a bronze clocking 1.58.97.
Walala girls completely clean swept the Under 18 and Under 20 events securing the top three positions. The sports school has presented the country with many athletes who have brought international fame to the Island and also boasts of producing the current leading 800m men’s runner Indunil Herath who won the silver medal at the Asian Indoor Championship in Ashgabat.
