After much drama and last minute intervening by the President Mahinda Rajapaksha himself, the school’s U 20 knock-out took place at the Royal Complex today.
St. Peter’s, Trinity, Kingswood, Dharmaraja, Royal, St Joseph’s and Isipathana College made to the second day of Inter School Under 20 7 A side Tournament.
As the first match of the day St. Peter’s College was to take on Nugawela MMV. However St. Peter’s received a walk over by Nugawela MMV. Taking on CWW Kannnagara Vidyalaya next Peter’s breezed through with an impressive 33 to the 12 by CWW qualifying to the quarter finals.
The first match for the day was held between Royal College and Lalith Athulathmudali Vidyalaya since St. Benedicts College also didn’t make it to the tournament. Royal College comfortably moved on the second round with 19 -05 and even made it to the quarter finals taking down Vidyartha College. The quarter final qualifying match for Royal was a 22 point victory. Tomorrow Royal College is to meet St. Peter’s College which will be the selective match for the semifinals.
Kingswood had a very easy access into the quarter finals. Taking on Zahira College whom they ousted 29-5 points and Ananda College in the second round to 26- 0. Kingswood will be facing another Kandy school tomorrow – Trinity College at their quarter finals. Trinity College’s just decimated their oppositions vs St. Aloysius College 26 – 0 and vs. Nalanda 45 – 0.
The fifth quarter final qualifier also was a Kandy school. Dharmaraja College was taking on St. John’s College in the second round straight off since the first match was cancelled. St. Johns also had the advantage of not facing a preliminary round match as Thurstan College dropped out. Dharmaraja College will be battling against St. Joseph’s College tomorrow as a qualifier for the semifinals.
The last three matches for the day were highlights by the winning teams. The losing teams couldn’t score any points. First out of the three was St. Joseph’s versus Prince of Wales where Prince of Wales were not allowed to score while St. Joseph’s bagged 24 points. In the second match Wesley pushed over Mahanama College17- nil
Lastly Isipathana College continued with similar domination scoring 22 points to Sylvester’s 0. As the last quarter finalists Isipathana College will be taking on Wesley College tomorrow.
