A member of the Indian team has confirmed to Cricbuzz that the injury to Shikhar Dhawan is “very bad”. The 33-year-old opener is in Leeds to undergo scans on his left thumb which he injured during the Australia game on Sunday. An update is expected later today.
The left-hander sustained the injury from a rising Pat Cummins bouncer during his century knock at The Oval in London. He was seen receiving treatment from physio Patrick Farhart on the same day, and didn’t come out to field in the second innings. He was later spotted in the dressing room with an ice pack over his thumb.
The news comes just two days ahead of their fixture against New Zealand, who are flying high with three consecutive victories. Dhawan’s injury might mean that India will have to push KL Rahul to the top of the order, and play a different No.4 batsman.
