Institute of Sports Medicine is the only institute established for the maintenance and improvement of the physical and mental health of Sri Lankan athletes.
Located at the Sports Ministry (independence avenue) it functions as the hub of sports medicine in Sri Lanka with the intention of promoting the physical and mental well being of athletes.
The unit boasts of a wide range of medical facilities required for the upliftment of the sports talent of the Sri Lankan athletes with the view to bringing them on par to international levels.
The objectives of this unit are :
1) To Improve the health and physical fitness of all sports persons to bring them to a level where they can become a strong sporting nation in Asia.
2)To help in the talent Identification process, especially using modern technology.
3)To make every effort to safeguard natural talents nurtured in to their full potential without being abused at the school level.
4)Conduct pre participation medical examinations on each and every athlete who has a potential career and early identification of problems and get remedial measures.
5)Maintain a database of all national level athletes.
6)Continuous monitoring of physical qualities of athlete by doing a physical test battery and take or guide to take appropriate measures.
7)Continuous monitoring of nutritional status of athletes and help them to maintain adequate nutrition.
8)Make awareness of importance of healthy mind in winning sports.
9)Continuous education throughout the country for all athletes, coaches parents and sports administrators in preventing injuries, importance of maintain sound nutritional and psychological status and doping in sports.
10)Make every effort to fight against doping in sports and maintain clean sports.
11)While being the hub for sports medicine with all the modern technology and expertise, takes steps to establish sports medicine departments in each every provincial and district hospital to better serve the sports person.
12)Conduct educational programs to coachers, sports trainers and medical assistants about best practices of sports first aid.
13)Provide sports first aid facilities to all National and International sporting events in keeping with international standards.
14)Encourage and facilitating everyone to take up sporting activities in every folk of life to make sports culture in Sri Lanka and their by fighting against growing non communicable diseases.
15)Doing research in the field of sports to make sure every sector in sports maintains best practices.
The services are available to athletes free of charge or for a nominal fee in some cases. Some of the services available are :

Sport physiotherapy – physical therapy which includes physiotherapy, sports massage therapy, acupuncture
Strength and conditioning for athletes with muscles weaknesses
General medicine and psychology treatment for national poolists
Sports science :
biomechanical analysis to prevent Injuries and enhance performances.
Physical fitness tests for sporting institutions
Nutritional guidance and assessments
Education services :Conducting seminars and awareness campaigns for athletes, coaches and parents on prevention of sports injuries, Nutrition, sports psychology, and doping on sport.
