The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to suspend the Indian Premier League (IPL) as several players and support staff members of franchise teams tested positive for Covid-19.
Several positive Covid-19 cases across IPL teams were recorded over the past couple of days thus the IPL authorities have taken the decision to suspend the tournament for the safety of all IPL stakeholders.
“We have suspended the IPL for now. The new window will be worked out later on. A statement will follow soon,” IPL chairman Brijesh Patel told Sportstar today.
The IPL match which was to be played on Monday (03rd May) between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Royal Challengers Bangalore in Ahmedabad was rescheduled after spinner Varun Chakravarthy and seam bowler Sandeep Warrier tested positive for Covid-19.
On Monday, two members of the Chennai Super Kings team; bowling coach Lakshmipathy Balaji and a bus cleaner had tested positive for Covid-19. On the eve of today’s IPL clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians, Amit Mishra and Wriddhiman Saha too tested positive for Covid-19.
The BCCI is now conducting discussions with authorities to ensure the safe travel for the overseas players. “We are in touch with the authorities to figure out how can we send the players back home and we will ensure that everyone is safe,” the BCCI official told Sportsstar.
