India have missed the April 25th deadline to submit their Champions Trophy squad to the ICC.
The BCCI have reportedly conveyed to the ICC that they could not submit the squad for “operational” reasons. The other seven countries participating, including Sri Lanka, have all announced their squads.
The official reason for missing the deadline, according to a BCCI official, is because, with BCCI secretary Amitabh Choudhury and CEO Rahul Johri attending ICC meetings and captain Virat Kohli playing the IPL, they were unable to bring together the relevant parties who needed to meet to pick out the 15 member squad.
Despite this, the underlying message of delaying the squad announcement from the BCCI to the ICC could also be that they are capable of pulling out of the Champions Trophy if their demands on revenue share are not met.
It is reported that in the past many teams have asked for extensions of a day or two in announcing their squads however it is understood that the BCCI have not made such a request. It is unclear as to whether there will be a sanction or a punishment for the BCCI’s delay in announcing the squad.
India are defending champions, having won the Champions Trophy back in 2013.
