India A recorded a 48-run win against their Sri Lankan counterparts at KSCA Stadium, Belagavi in the first unofficial ODI of the tour today, 6th June.

The game was shortened to 42 overs following a delayed start due to a wet outfield. After winning the toss, Sri Lankan skipper Ashan Priyanjan decided to bowl first.

Right from the beginning, Gaikwad was on the money, striking at run-a-ball. He opened the innings with 19-year old Shubman Gill who departed for just 5 runs.

Thereafter, Gaikwad put on a 172-run partnership for the second wicket with able partner Anmolpreet Singh which sent the Lankan bowlers on a desperate hunt for solutions.

Rising to the challenge, the visiting skipper chipped in to bring his boys back into the game as he got rid of Anmolpreet Singh. Singh struck a 67-ball 65 runs, making his stay at the pitch a worthy one.

Then, skipper Ishan Kishan joined Gaikwad at the center to post another stunning partnership of 99 runs. Kishan went after the bowling in his usual fashion scoring 45 runs in 34 deliveries. Lahiru Kumara’s extra pace undid the explosive Mumbai batsman.

Gaikwad took his knock to a different level as the innings progressed. From run-a-ball to a strike rate of 137.50, the right-hander took the Lankan bowlers on a ride striking 26 boundaries and 2 sixes on his way to a mammoth score of 187 runs.

Lahiru Kumara was the only successful bowler for Sri Lanka. The speedster picked up 3 wickets in the game although he was slightly expensive.

Chasing a mountainous 318 runs to win in 42 overs, Sri Lanka slipped early losing Samarawickrama for a duck and Dickwella for 19 runs within the first 5 overs.

The man in form, Bhanuka Rajapaksa hung around for a while but managed 29 runs for his merits. Sri Lanka kept crumbling at regular intervals losing wickets on one end while all-rounder Shehan Jayasuriya was desperately hung on to the other.

Jayasuriya constructed a splendid hundred for Sri Lanka fighting alone. His knock was coloured by 8 boundaries and 2 sixes as he posted 108 runs to his name on the board.

Skipper, Priyanjan, occupied the crease in a rush adding 29 runs in 15 deliveries with 2 sixes and 2 boundaries, but never served the purpose.

World Cup discard Dasun Shanaka also struck 44 runs in 31 balls. But it wasn’t good enough to take Sri Lanka ‘A’ pass the line. Jayasuriya remained unbeaten at the crease as Sri Lanka ‘A’ ended at 269 for 6 at the end of their quota.
