The Novices Fencing Championships 2015 organized by the Rapid Fencing club under the keen guidance of the National Association of Fencing Sri Lanka (NAFSL) was held on 12th June 2015 at the Silueta Fencing club, Biyagama.
The championship entertained the participation of over 80 fencers taking part in the 3 weapon categories which even included very young fencers at the age of 13 who showed great promise for the near future.
In the Individual Foil Men’s category, Yakdehiga Sameera Niroshan De Silva of the Slimtex Fencing Club beat D Priyan Senevirathna of the Linea Fencing club to win the respective weapon category. It was an intense final between K.P. Kasun Vimukthi Pathirana of the Linea Fencing Club and Migee Hewage Sumith Wijerathne of the MDS Fencing club in the Epee weapon category where, Pathirana ended winner while in the Sabre Men’s category J.K Dushan Sasanka Perera of the Unichela Fencing Club beat Palihawadana Arachchige Roshan Sammera Palihawadana of Slimline Fencing Club to be awarded winner of the category.
The Women’s foil weapon finals was won by A.M Samudika Dilrukshi of the Rapid Fencing Club beating P.G. Renu Meeriyam of the Linea Fencing Club. Abesinhe Pathiranage Shiroma Lakmali of the MDS Fencing Club emerged winner in the Epee discipline after a intensely competed final against Jayasinghe Mudiyanselage Pushpa Kumari of Slimtex Fencing club while, Senanayaka Arachchilage Deepthika Senanayake of the Slimline Fencing club beat K.W Nadeesha Kumari of the Rapid Fencing Club in the Sabre weapon category.
After a day filled with intense action and a pool Fencing talent being showcased, it is most likely that this tournament provided budding Fencers an opportunity to gain exposure and develop in terms of composure and experience. Winners and Runners up will directly qualify to the National Fencing Championship to be held in October this year.
