While Mortaza was fined 20 percent of his match fee, Gunathilaka was reprimanded for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct, adding one demerit point to each player’s disciplinary records. The players admitted to their offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee David Boon.

Mashrafe, in the sixth over of Sri Lanka’s innings, dismissed Kusal Mendis and then gave him a send-off, yelling while running close to him in a “manner that could have provoked an aggressive reaction,” stated an ICC release. As for Gunathilaka, he gave Tamim Iqbal a send-off in the sixth over of the chase.

The Article relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”

This was Gunathilaka’s first offence, while it was Mashrafe’s second offence since the introduction of the demerit-point system in September 2016, having had received one earlier during the home ODIs against England in October 2016.
