Four Sri Lankan players nominated for ICC Awards of the Decade

The International Cricket Council has announced nominations for Player of the Decade awards in various categories, representing both male and female International Cricketers who have excelled during the period of the year 2010 to 2020. Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Lasith Malinga and Rangana Herath were included in these nominations.

Former Sri Lankan Cricketer Kumar Sangakkara, who holds the record for the highest run scorer for Sri Lanka in both Test and ODI Cricket, has been nominated for the ICC Men’s Player of the Decade Award and ICC Men’s ODI Player of the Decade.

Former Sri Lankan Skipper Mahela Jayawardene, who won the Spirit of Cricket Award at the ICC Awards Ceremony held in 2013, has been nominated for the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award of the Decade. Former Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Rangana Herath, who ended his career as the most successful left-arm spinner in Test Cricket history with 433 wickets, has been nominated for the ICC Men’s Test Player of the Decade Award. 

High-profile Commentary Panel for LPL

Sri Lankan speedster Lasith Malinga, who plays only T20 cricket for Sri Lanka, has been nominated for the ICC Men’s ODI Player of the Decade and ICC Men’s T20I player of the Decade Awards. Malinga, the only active Cricketer among four Sri Lankans nominated for these awards, is the only bowler with 100 T20 International wickets and the only bowler in the history of International Cricket to take four wickets in four balls in both ODIs and T20Is. 

ICC has announced that the winners of these awards will be determined based on the number of votes each player receives. 

The list of nominations is as follows – 

  • Men’s Player of the Decade: Virat Kohli (India), Ravichandran Ashwin (India), Joe Root (England), Kane Williamson (New Zealand), Steve Smith (Australia), AB de Villiers (South Africa), and Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka).
  • Men’s ODI Player of the Decade: Virat Kohli (India), Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka), Mitchell Starc (Australia), AB de Villiers (South Africa), Rohit Sharma (India), MS Dhoni (India), and Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka)
  • Men’s Test Player of the Decade: Virat Kohli (India), Kane Williamson (New Zealand), Smith, James Anderson (England), Rangana Herath (Sri Lanka), and Yasir Shah (Pakistan).
  • Men’s T20I Player of the Decade: Rashid Khan (Afghanistan), Virat Kohli (India), Imran Tahir (South Africa), Aaron Finch (Australia), Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka), Chris Gayle (West Indies), and Rohit Sharma (India).
  • Women’s ODI Player of the Decade: Meg Lanning (Australia), Ellyse Perry (Australia), Mithali Raj (India), Suzie Bates (New Zealand), Stafanie Taylor (West Indies) and Jhulan Goswami (India).
  • Women’s Player of the Decade: Ellyse Perry (Australia), Meg Lanning (Australia), Suzie Bates (New Zealand), Stafanie Taylor (West Indies), Mithali Raj (India), Sarah Taylor (England).
  • ICC Spirit of Cricket Award of the Decade: Virat Kohli (India), Kane Williamson (New Zealand), Brendon McCullum (New Zealand), Misbah-ul-Haq (Pakistan), MS Dhoni (India), Anya Shrubsole (England), Katherine Brunt (England), Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka), and Daniel Vettori (New Zealand).
