Five matches of the Singer Schools ‘Under 19 Division I’ Cricket Tournament 2018/19 were conducted today around the island.
Royal College, Colombo vs St. Joseph’s College, Colombo
The traditional fixture between Royal College and St. Joseph’s College commenced today at St. Joseph’s College Grounds. The visitors won the toss and decided to take the first lease of the wicket but did not get a good start to their innings as they lost two wickets for 42 runs in 24 overs. However, the right handed duo Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Bhagya Dissanayake met at the crease and put on a 110-run partnership for the third wicket.

Bhagya Dissanayake top scored with a knock of 88 runs off 207 balls including 15 fours before being bowled by off spinner Ashan Daniel in the 63rd over. Pasindu Sooriyabandara who represented Sri Lanka U19s in recent times gave good support at the other end scoring 63 runs. After their dismissals, the visitors lost their way as they were restricted to 240 runs.
At one stage, Royal College was 152 runs for 2 wickets but the batting collapse saw them losing 7 wickets for just 88 runs. Left arm spinner Shalinda Senevirathne was instrumental in causing this collapse with figures of 6 wickets for 83 runs in 34 overs including 8 maidens. In reply, Johanne de Zilva and Sheron Fonseka opened the innings for the Joes and got off to a flying start scoring 36 runs in 6 overs before the end of the first day’s play.

The Group A fixture between Mahinda College and Devapathiraja College ended in a draw today at Mahinda College Grounds in Galle but the hosts managed to win first innings points. Nipun Malinga’s brilliant knock of 124 runs and left arm seamer Pasan Pethangoda’s match bag of 8 wickets for 72 runs helped Mahinda College to take honors in this encounter.

The Group D fixture between Ananda College and Wesley College commenced today at Wesley College Grounds in Colombo. The Anandian skipper won the toss and opted to bat first in their own backyard and posted 288 runs for 8 wickets at stumps on day one. Muditha Ranathunga and Kalana Wijesiri shone with the bat for the hosts scoring 84 and 75 runs respectively.
