Henry Senaratne Memorial Volleyball Championship for the 14th time

The Henry Senaratne Memorial Volleyball Tournament organized by the De Mazenod College Volleyball Committee will commence once on the 6th of November 2016.

This year’s edition will feature 11 schools in the island as they battle it out for glory.

The tournament which first began in the year 1998 is held to commemorate the late Mr. Henry Senaratne who was once a teacher at De Mazenod College, Kandana and played a huge role in developing volleyball in the school as a coach/MIC.

Although the competition was not held continuously due to various reasons, it has successfully completed 13 editions so far featuring some of the best volleyball teams in the island including Davi Samara MV, Seeduwa and Dhammissara National School, Nattandiya.

Dhammissara National School, Nattandiya and Davi Samara MV, Seeduwa have had the bigger loot of the championship throughout the years while De Mazenod College and Bandarawela Central College have also had their say occasionally.

The hosts, De Mazenod emerged victorious last year when they overcame Rajasinghe MMV, Hanwella with a comprehensive 3 – 0 set win in the finals.

The 11 teams of this year have been drawn into 2 groups where they will play it out on a league basis on 6th for Group A and on 12th for Group B in the month of November 2016 and the top 2 teams of each group will be selected for the knockout stage at the end of the day.

Maris Stella College, Negombo are this year’s favourites having steadily developed their game through the years to be ranked among the best in the island and have also being placed 4th in the National Schools Games Volleyball Tournament this year.

Defending champions De Mazenod College will be looking out to retain the title once again this year and are coming into the game placed as champions of the 10th Blue, Gold & Blue Volleyball Tournament organized by Royal College, Colombo.

Last year’s runners-up Rajasinghe MMV, Hanwella and Royal College, Colombo are some of the other teams to keep an eye out for.

All matches will be held at the De Mazenod College Volleyball Courts from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm starting on the 6th of November, 2016.
