It was one-way traffic and a 9-try win for the Park lads as hosts Havelock Sports Club, in a complete demolishing job, defeated the minnows of this season – Navy Sports Club – by a thumping 55-05 in the third Quarter Final clash of the prestigious Clifford Cup Knockouts. played at Havelock Park on Thursday (29 February). The ‘pink shirts’ continued their winning momentum from their last league encounter as they finished as the third best team in the League tourney, with their season ending WITH sweet revenge victory against CH&FC.
Just like the final score showed, the game was totally marshalled by the Park Club as they went for a complete rampage. In fact, ThePapare commentary team had a tough outing as well when selecting the ‘Player of the Match’ at the final whistle due to the Havies outfit playing an all-round game. Nonetheless, their opponents were a depleted outfit, battered hard throughout the season with a plethora of on field and off the field issues which marred their season. The Sailors, once a mighty force of Sri Lanka Club Rugby in the recent decade especially during post 2010 and pre-2017, ended a season to forget as they bid goodbye to the 2023/24 campaign without tasting a single win in 11 games. Former Josephian Skipper and Senior man Stephan Gregory scored the solitary try for Navy. Former D. S. Skipper Dinupa Senavirathne opened the scoring of the game.
