Havelock Sports Club, CR & FC, Kandy Sports Club and Police ‘A’ topped their respective groups at the end of day one of the Dialog Club Rugby 7’s tournament – worked off at Racecourse International Stadium – setting up quarter final showdowns with Army ‘A’, Navy ‘A’, Air Force ‘A’ and CH & FC ‘A’ respectively on day two.
Spectators were treated to a total of 24 games as 16 club rugby teams tested each other in the first tournament of the 2019/ 20 season.
Peterson RFC, Malay CC and Galle RFC were the new additions to the tournament apart from the usual 8 A division clubs.
The Club heavy weights made easy work of their weaker as the 50-point mark was crossed off on 6 occasions as CH & FC ‘A’ — on two occasions — , Police ‘A’, Havelock Sports Club, CR & FC, and Army ‘B’ were amongst the teams who crossed the half-century mark.
Havelock Sports Club defeated CH & FC ‘A’ in the decisive game to top group A. A young CR & FC outfit were unstoppable, notching up a total of 31+65+27, holding all three of their opponents in group B scoreless, ending the day in red hot form, topping their group.

Kandy Sports Club added former CR captain Kavindu Perera into their ranks, adding more speed into the already potent back-line and were unstoppable dispatching their opponents to end on top of group C.

Meanwhile, Police ‘A’ were pushed to the brink by Army, however, the Cops hung on to win the final group game of the day against the Soldiers, 21-14, to take top spot in group D.

Day two kicks off with the Bowl/ Shield quarter finals as the 3rd – 4th place teams in the four groups square off to begin the finals.
