St. Benedict’s kipper Yohan Soysa produced a brilliant bowling performance to bowl out Gurukula for 89 runs in the first innings before an unbeaten 62 from Shiran Ratnayake puts hosts in firm control of their U-19 inter-school cricket match which began at Kotahena today.
At stumps St. Benedict’s were cruising smoothly on 188 for five with Ratnayake playing a responsible innings. His 62 came off in 98 balls and had ten boundaries.
Batting first Gurukula could only muster just 84 runs playing 29 overs when Soysa and Geethika Jayathilake ran through the innings sharing eight wickets between them. Skipper Soysa was however the star of the morning session as he claimed five wickets for just 11 runs in his nine over spell while Jayathilake picked up three wickets giving away 22 runs. Gurukula lost the opener S Dilranga when the score was on six but their top scorer Lisula Lakshan (31) and K Madusanka (10) added an invaluable 45 runs for the second wicket but the loss of Mudusanka opened up the weak middle and late order as they lost the remaining eight wickets for just 33 runs.
