In an inaugural occasion in schools boxing history, the School Boxing Association is to hold a championship for school girls under the patronage of the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka; “Girls’ School Boxing Tournament for the Westgate Cup 2014”
The tournament which is to be conducted according to the AIBA rules effective from year 2014 will commence on the 5th of December and conclude on 7th December 2014, at the Linea Gymnasium, Kandy Industrial Park (BOI), Pallekele, Kandy. The daily bouts will start at 3.00 pm each day with School girls aged 13 – 14 years (born year 2000 and 2001), Junior girls aged 15 -16 years(born in 1998 and 1999), and Young women aged 17 -18 years (born in 1996 and 1997) competing for the title. The pugilists will compete in 16 weight categories ranging from 33kg – 60kgs.
This tournament is only open to amateur female school boxers, however those who competed at school inter-house boxing tournaments are also permitted to participate in this Tournament. Nominations were to be submitted for any of the 16 weight categories mentioned above, however only 12 can compete in the Meet. No boxers other than the boxers in the entry forms are to be allowed to enter after the registration which is to be held on the 4th of December 2014.
The registrations as in any competition will include checking of Birth certificates, Medical Certificates (from a Western qualified doctor) and issue of new medical Record Books which will be carried out on the 4th of December 2014 from 4.00 to 8.00pm at KENGALLA MAHA VIDIYALAYA, KENGALLA. All MICs of Schools are said be requested present at the checking.
The tournament will entertain one team per school where each team can have one boxer representing each weight category.
An entry fee of Rs.200.00 per competitor, medical book fee of Rs. 50.00 each and annual member fees for each school amounting to Rs 1,000.00 should be paid as entry charges and fees for this tournament.
All winners, runners up and semi-finalists will receive medals and certificates while the best boxers and best losers will receive Trophies. The Champion team will receive the West Gate Challenge Cup which will be decided according to the highest number of Gold, Silver and Bronze medals won at the tournament.
Boxing in this country is developing rapidly and gaining popularity among the youth and tournaments of this nature only enhance the enthusiasm for the country’s sport.
