Giant killing Super Sun down Renown; Army’s campaign falters with two defeats

Giant killing Super Sun who stunned Colombo FC last week defeated last year’s Champions League runners-up Renown SC with a late strike from Kavinda Athuraliya.

Athuraliya’s goal minutes before full time gave Super Sun a 2-1 win at the CR&FC grounds to the shock of bipartisan Renown crowd.

Super Sun from Beruwala had a miserable first year in the premier division finishing bottom of their group. However this year they have started the campaign in a positive manner getting the much needed wins with the help from some new additions to the squad.

It was however the hosts, Renown SC who took the lead as early as  the 2nd minute through MohomedSafraz. Renown went into halftime with that slender 1-0- lead. In the second half Super Sun started off positively and equalized in the 56th minute through the veteran striker EB Channa, who switched clubs from Ratnam.

It was a nail biting finish as both sides were searching for that goal which would give them the precious three points. It was the visitors who showed more heart as KavindaAthuraliya scored in the 87th minute.

 

Air Force in a narrow win over Army

2013 Champions league winners Air Force defeated the 2013 FA Cup champions Army 2-1 at the Baddagana Football Complex.

It was sweet revenge for Air Force as they were beaten by Army in last year’s Champion of Champions match, which is played between the Champions League winner and the FA Cup winner.

All three goals were scored in a frantic 8 minutes in the opening half. Star man for Air Force KavinduIshan scored the opener in the 18th minute and D.K. Duminda doubled the lead two minutes later. Army’s Madushan De Silva cut the lead in half in the 26th minute. Army went in search of an equalizer but was halted by the stern Air Force defense. 

 

Negombo Youth outclass Army

Negombo Youth stunned the visiting Army SC 2-1 at the Maris Stella Grounds in Negombo.

Negombo Youth scored too early goals in the first half against the much fancied Army and inflicted Army’s second defeat of the week. Pradeep Fernando scored in the 2nd minute and veteran striker Kasun Jayasooriya who is making his return to football after a lengthy suspension due to match fixing scored the second in the 11th minute. Negombo Youth went into halftime with a healthy 2-0 lead.

In the second half Army tried to score a early goal but only managed to pierce the Negombo Youth defense in the 76th minute when Mohomed Issadeen scored. However they couldn’t manage another and Negombo Youth held on to a morale boosting win. Army’s Champions League winning aspirations are all over having lost four matches out of their six matches played.

 

Navy overcome a resilient Crystal Palace

Table topping Navy SC needed two second half goals to overcome a resilient Crystal Palace SC from Gampola at the Jayathilaka Stadium in Nawalapitiya.

Crystal Palace controlled the game in the first half which ended nil all. In the second half Navy made some tactical changes which gave them more flow to the game. M.Priyadarshana scored in the 61st minute and A.T.Eranga scored in the 73rd minute breaking the resilient Crystal Palace defense.

 

Shola’s double to down Thihariya Youth

A.O.Shola’s brace either side of Mohomed Yasar’s strike was enough as Solid SC defeated a fighting Thihariya Youth at the Sri Bodhi Grounds in Gampaha.

A large crowd had gathered at the Sri Bodhi grounds to cheer on their home town heroes, Thihariya Youth but Shola silenced the crowd with a wonderful strike in the 19th minute. The silence was short lived as Mohomed Yasar equalized in the 23rd minute. However Shola regained the lead for Solid from Anuradhapura in the 28th minute.

Thihariya Youth went in search of their second goal but it wasn’t to be as Solid held on to win a close match.
