Four Sri Lankan boxers to take on the world at the AIBA

Four boxers from Sri Lanka are set to participate at the AIBA Men’s World Championships to be held from the 14th – 27th October in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

The Men’s World Championships is a significant event in the AIBA Calendar, where boxers between the ages of 19 to 40 compete against the best in the world in 10 respective weight categories, where winners are crowned World Champions.

The team comprises of the four boxers – P D Suresh (52kg) from Slimline SC, a former bronze medalist of the Commonwealth Championships 2010, Gayan Jayaweera (56kg) from Slimline SC, Sisira Kumarasinghe (60kg) of Navy and Roshan Madushanka (75kg) of Casualline will acquire his first international experience. Mr. Amila Aravinda will accompany the team as coach, whilst former President of the ABA Mr. Dian Gomes will travel as the Manager of the team.

For several years now, AIBA has delivered one of the most pioneering sports development programs in the world; the “AIBA Road to Almaty” Programme offers athletes and coaches from underprivileged and developing boxing countries the opportunity to attend intensive two week training camps in the build-up to major AIBA competitions such as the World Championships. AIBA provides each participant with airline tickets, accommodation and food, full training facilities with equipment, gloves and headgear, and local transportation. Malith Prabashwara of Slimline SC was chosen and invited by AIBA to partake and represent Sri Lanka in this year’s training camp. Mr. Wasantha Kumara will accompany him as coach for the training camp.

The World Championships has developed into a tournament which demands high performance in the fight for medals and titles. Winning is achieved by skill, fitness, concentration and an astute use of the ring. Talent and determination is everything.
