“Following the appointment of Garratt Williamson, former international referee from New Zealand, as a consultant to the SLRFU Referees, a development plan has been put in place for A Panel referees to help improve the way rugby is refereed in Sri Lanka.
For the immediate future, referees will be focussing on two key areas of the game with a simple work on at scrum and tackle.
At scrum, referees will slow down scrum calls, and not move on to the next call until both scrums are still. This will ensure greater stability and a better chance of a successful scrum. Teams that push early before the ball goes in will be free-kicked.
At tackle, referees will focus on getting the tackler out, not allowing them to roll out slowly or lie in the wrong side of the tackle. This will be dealt with harshly. Players need to roll out to the side immediately.
These two focus areas will create quicker ball at the tackle and more attacking opportunities. Steady scrums create a great opportunity to launch new attacks from.”
Good stability = Scrum is still after Crouch, Bind and Set.
No stability = Scrum is moving after every call and the result is an uneven set and a messy scrum
Tackler = Army defender falls on the wrong side and does not roll away. He should be penalised
Tackler = Red 5 does not roll away immediately and should be penalised.
