The Asian and Asian Junior Championship Trials, the first athletics event for 2022, commenced yesterday (10th) at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Some star athletes including Dilishi Kumarasinghe, Nadeesha Kumarasinghe, Nimali Liyanarachchi and Medhani Jayarathene were unable to participate in the trials due to various reasons, but this provided an opportunity for youngsters to grab the limelight.
The meet kicked off with the long-distance races, the Women’s 10,000m (senior) and the Men’s 5,000m (junior). Sri Lanka Army athletes dominated the races, with HMCS Herath and Dhanushka Sandaruwan taking home the Gold in the two respective events.
The highlight on the first day was the renewing of the pole-vault national record by Sachini Perera. Sachini, recording a height of 3.65m renewed her own record of 3.60m, which she established in 2021.
A few more marquee events were conducted during the day, including the Men’s and Women’s 100m and 400m finals in both the senior and junior categories.
