Chairman of Media and Finance Ranjith Rodrigo confirmed that the Football Federation of Sri Lanka will be increasing the Champions’ Prize money to 1 million.
Mr. Rodrigo confirmed this answering to a question from the media at the press conference launch of the 2016/2017 Cargills Food City FA Cup at the Football House.
The question was first answered by the Chief Operating Officer of Cargills Foods Company (Pvt) Ltd Mr. Dhammika Guruge;
“We are partners (with FFSL) of this endeavor. We are investing a lot of money to the competition so we will discuss and take necessary action.”
However Mr. Rodrigo was swift to confirm the increase of the prize money.
“We didn’t increase it for this year but we can confirm now itself that we will be increasing it to LKR 1 Million from next year’s competition (2017/2018). We will definitely do it,” Rodrigo added.
The current winner’s prize money of Rs.700,000 has been there for the last three FA Cups and has received much criticism from the clubs and media as there has been no increase, especially as it is one of Sri Lanka’s blue ribbon championships. With the champions prize money being increased it is highly likely that the runners-up prize money will too be increased.
