The most eagerly awaited schools football sevens tournament; 10th Zahira Super 16 Soccer 7’s will kick off this Saturday, 18th October from 8:30 am onwards at Zahira College Grounds, Maradana.
This is an inter school invitational seven a side football tournament organized by the Past Prefects’ Association of Zahira College with the objective of “Adding values to Youth Football in Sri Lanka”.
“Past pupils bring a lot of strength to the school by organizing various events and engaging in sports activities that bring about social values to all communities; I personally endorse such efforts.” The proud Principal of Zahira College,Trizvii Marikkar added.
The 16 teams were divided into four groups and the first round will be conducted on a league basis. Based on placing in the first round, teams will be drawn into four categories in the second round, namely Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield Championship. The Cup Winners will be given a Cash prize of Rs.50,000/- and total cash rewards and awards worth over Rs. 500,000/- will be on offer among participants.
The all island competition is with the intention of promoting the importance of brotherhood, peace and harmony within all religions at school level. With that intention the organizing committee has invited Al – Aqsa College – Kinniya, Holy Cross College, Kalutara, Manippai Hindu College, Jaffna, St. Mary’s College, Kegalle, Maris Stella College, Negombo along with the Colombo based schools.
In celebration of the 10th year of Zahira Super 16 Soccer 7’s, the Past Prefects’ Association also organized a “Celebrity Football Match” Powered by Li-Ning between “All Stars” and “Cricket Stars” which was held on the 8th of October. The Cricket Stars led by Mahela Jayawardena ran away with a 6-1 win against some of the best footballers Sri Lanka has produced including Subhani Hashimdeen, Mohomed Roomy as well as current Sri Lanka coach Nikola Kavazovic.
