Royal made to sweat; SSC dethrone Visakha

Royal ‘A’ team pulled through to victory with the slimmest of margins while SSC crushed the defending champions, Visakha Vidyalaya at the recently concluded Ellawala Water Polo League Championship 2018 at the Air Force Swimming Pool Complex.

The Ellawala Water Polo League is Sri Lanka’s only water polo league tournament held annually. The tournament is organized by the national body, the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union and was conducted over a span of four weekends.

Royal College regained the men’s title in 2017 after 8 long years but were put to the test this year forcing the absolute best out of them. At the end of the competition, Royal ended up 18 overall league points and 9 victories to their name.

Royal College Union Aquatic Club (old boys) who also put in a team had an impressive stint in the league with similar stats – 9 wins and 18 overall points. However, the difference was in the “loss” tally where Royal College remained unbeaten for the second consecutive year as opposed to the Union Aquatic Club’s 1-match defeat.

Royal stake claim for Ellawala Water Polo title

The one and only annual Water Polo League in Sri Lanka..

Sri Lanka Air Force finished third with 8 wins and 16 points while Army ‘A’ finished their journey in fourth place with 12 points and 6 victories.

SSC women remained the only unbeaten team in this year’s tournament, stunning a helpless Visakha out of the champions seat. The defending champions looked shaky from the get-go, drawing 1 of 4 matches played, ending up with 1 defeat against SSC.

SSC finished the tournament with 4 wins and 8 points in total. Visakha could only manage a total of 5, to come in second. Ladies College finished third in the standings, losing out to Visakha on ‘goal difference’.
