Day 1 of the Singer Under 20 Schools’ Sevens was worked off at Racecourse International Stadium and Royal complex today with eight teams remaining unbeaten at the end the 1st day of competition.
The games kicked off at 08.20 am with the 31 participating schools being divided into 8 groups. Groups A to D played all their games at Royal Complex while Groups E to H played their games at the Racecourse stadium.
The defending champions S. Thomas’ College topped group A by defeating the much fancied St. Joseph’s outfit 22 – 17. With this defeat the Milo President’s Trophy champions had to move towards the Bowl quarterfinal.
Last year’s runners up Isipathana only played one game as they received two walkovers with D.S Senanayake College and Mahinda College not participating in this tournament.
2015 champions St. Peter’s won their three games comprehensively and Trinity and Royal too finished on top of their respective groups.
Zahira College missed out of a Cup quarterfinal position after a nail-biting game against St. Anthony’s. The game ended in a 14 all draw but St. Anthony’s scored more points than Zahira in their other two games and went through to the quarters.
Kingswood were the surprise package of the day, beating the strong Wesley College outfit 33 nil in their last group game. Science College secured the last quarterfinal spot thrashing Dharmaraja College 36 nil.

The Cup quarterfinals will start at 08.20 am tomorrow with S. Thomas’ taking on St.Peter’s followed by Royal versus Trinity, Kingswood versus Science and Isipathana versus St. Anthony’s.
The Cup final is schedule to be played at 05.30 pm.
All games on Day 2 will be played at the Racecourse International Stadium.
