Sabaragamuwa Province defeated Rajarata while Eastern Province held the strong Northern Province to a draw in matchweek 5 of the Ceylon Provincial League 2022 played for the Independence Trophy.
SABARAGAMUWA v RAJARATA
A 2nd half burst saw Sabaragamuwa defeat Wayamba Rajarata 4-1 at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy.
A defensive mistake by Rajarata allowed Sabaragamuwa captain Mohamed Shifan to score as early as the 5th minute. Rajarata had multiple chances but were denied by the brilliant goalkeeping from Nuwan Gimhana.
In the 2nd half, Mohamed Mushfik continued his goal-scoring form from the last match, tapping in an easy goal in the 66th minute after the hard work was done by Shifan. Mohamed Ijas too got on the scoresheet in the 76th minute, scoring a wonderful free-kick, earned by Shifan, from the edge of the box.

Substitute Mohamed Rasan made it 4-0, volleying home the opportunity once again set-up by his skipper Shifan in the 85th minute. Asikur Rahuman scored a consolation goal in the 89th minute for Rajarata through a penalty. Though, Nuwan Gimhana’s cleansheet was spoilt by the penalty he had another brilliant 2nd half.
NORTHERN v EASTERN
Eastern Province held the high-riding Northern Province to 0-0 draw at the Jayathilake Stadium in Nawalapitiya.
Neither side were able to create meaningful opportunities as both goalkeepers, Mohamed Murshid and Amalraj had a quiet day.
