D S Senanayake College took major honours in their annual inter-school 6th Battle of the Golds Big Match against traditional rivals Mahanama College which ended in a draw at the P. Saravanamuttu Stadium, yesterday.
D S Senanayake after having piled up a formidable 253 in their first innings, went on to dismissing their opponents for 171 runs in reply.
However Mahanama put up an improved batting performance in their later part of their innings and went onto reach 170 with skipper S. Kaushalya stroking a fine half century.
Even then, D S Senanayake was in with an outside chance of forcing the first ever win in the Big Match series when they reduced their opponents to 67 for 5 at one stage.
Mahanama were in a spot of bother at that point as they had not even wiped out the first innings deficit with four of their top order batsmen including skipper Pavan Devinda who reached the 1000-run mark for the season back in the dressing room. However the right-hand left-hand combination of S. Kaushalya and T. Madusanka stood in the gap with a stubborn 41 run fifth wicket partnership.
The pair batted determinedly almost the final 25 overs with S.Kaushalya completing a splendid half century inclusive of ten fours. His partner T Madusanka also made a solid 27 with the help of one six and one fours.
Earlier Man of the Match and Best Bowler D.Chamath captured nine wickets for 58 which was a school cricket record, to bowl out DSS for 253 runs
D S Senanayake middle-order batsman H.Maduwantha who cracked a superb half century in the first innings was named Best Batsman and S.Karunarathne of D S won the Best Fielder’s award.
