D. S. Senanayake’s success had a great amount of significance as they were able to break an eight year old hoodoo and register the first win in the Big Match series which they did it in style with more than a session to spare.
In fact their total dominance over their opponents in this encounter was very clear throughout the game with Mahanama College struggling to reach even the three figure mark in their two innings.
The match winner for D. S. Senanayake College was undoubtedly their captain, main strike bowler and Sri Lanka youth cap Binura Fernando who had the memorable outing with a matchbag of thirteen wickets.
In fact Fernando was quite appropriately named as the Best Bowler and Man of the Match as he almost single handedly destroyed the Mahanama College batting for 104 runs and 125 runs in the two innings respectively.
Fernando was highly effective in the first innings with splendid figures of six wickets for 40 runs and he was even better in the second innings where he produced one of the most destructive spells of bowling in the Big Match series to claim seven wickets for 45 runs.
Earlier D. S. Senanayake College produced a magnificent batting performance to pile up a formidable 266 runs for five wickets in their first innings after they had been put into bat by Mahanama College.
The main feature in the D. S. Senanayake College batting, was the second wicket partnership of 173 runs from 282 deliveries between opening batsman Uvin Bandara and his younger brother Kavin Bandara.
The former hit a sparkling century with the aid of thirteen boundaries but the latter unfortunately was dismissed for 90 runs having struck half a dozen of boundaries.
In fact Uvin Bandara was later named Best Batsman while Nayana Prabath was picked as the Best Fielder.
