Dineth Madurawala ton defies St. Sebastian’s

Dineth Madurawala scored a magnificent century to guide St. Joseph’s College past 300 in their Singer-cup traditional game against St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa which started in Moratuwa today.

Skipper Harin Cooray won the toss and decided to bat first as the visitors managed to pile up 319 for 7 in 64 overs. The Josephians were 125 for 6 at one stage and went on to declare the innings after a strong comeback thanks to a 125 run partnership for the 7th wicket between Dineth Madurawala and Jehan Fernandopulle.

In-form right-hander Madurawala smashed an unbeaten 107 off 132 balls and was ably supported by Fernandopulle who made a classy 73 to steady the ship for the visitors. Tashik Perera and Asher Warnakulasuriya picked up two wickets each for the home team.

In reply, the lads from Moratuwa were 109 for 3 in 28 overs, Opening batsman Nimesh Bandara was unbeaten on 60 for the hosts, while right-arm quick Kavindu Jayathissa picked up 2 wickets for the Josephians at stumps.

Thurstan College dominated day one against St. Servatius College, Matara in their Singer-cup group D game at Uyanwatta grounds.

The visitors won the toss and sent St. Servatius to have a bat and they were bundled out for a below par 123 in 41 overs. Supun Kavinda top scored with 46, while right-arm off spinner Janushka Fernando was the most successful bowler as he picked up 3 scalps for the visitors.

In reply, the visitors lost a wicket for 37 runs at close, when rain interrupted play on the opening day.

Dharmaraja College, Kandy and St. Mary’s College, Kegalle shared honours in the opening day of their Singer-cup group A game at Prison grounds.

The home team, batting first put up a reasonable 210 in 59.1 overs as skipper Deshan Gunasinghe scored a classy 52 to steady the ship for the hosts, whereas Lasitha Udage captured 4 for 73 with the ball.

Chasing a target of 211, the lads from Kegalle were 108 for 4 at stumps.

S. Thomas’ College, Mount lavinia were well placed at the end of day one against Gurukula College, Kelaniya in their Singer-cup group C clash in Mount Lavinia.

The home team won the toss and decided to bat first and posted 248 as they were bowled out in the 69th over. Dulith Gunaratne made a valuable 46 for the hosts, while Udara Ravindu claimed 5 wickets for Gurukula College, Kelaniya.

Lumbini College was surprisingly on top against the much fancied Ananda College outfit in their Singer-cup group B game which  commenced today at Colts grounds.

The Anandians batting first were knocked out for a paltry 130 in 60 overs. Right-handed opening batsman Kavindu Gimhan scored 37 crucial runs, while Lumbini skipper Thanuka Dabare took a 5 wicket haul with his off spin.

The home team made 99 for 4 as the skipper Thanuka Dabare made an unbeaten half-ton, while fast bowler Chamika Gunasekara chipped in with 3 wickets at close of play.
