Dineth Madurawala lights up Jaffna with a dazzling ton

Dineth Madurawala stroked a stunning century for St. Joseph’s College against St. Patrick’s College, Jaffna in their under 19 schools traditional cricket encounter played for the Rectors Trophy in Jaffna.

Rev. Fr. Jero Selvanayagam, Rector of St Patrick’s College and Rev. Fr. Travis Gabriel Rector of St Joseph’s College took the initiative for this traditional encounter to be played annually from this year.

The 2016/17 Josephian captain, Harin Cooray won the toss in their season opening match and had no hesitation to bat first. The visitors posted a mammoth 386 for 5 before declaring the innings. The hosts were tottering at 65 for 6 at close of play on day one.

Right-handed Madurawala collected seven fours and a six during his magnificent 106-ball 101 while Jehan Daniel, Revan Kelly and Nipun Sumanasinghe made half-centuries. Skipper Cooray and fast-bowler Daniel picked up 2 wickets apiece.

Ananda College vs Mahinda College

Ananda College managed to take the upper hand at stumps on day one in their under 19 division 1 cricket encounter against Mahinda College, Galle at Army grounds in Panagoda.

The Anandian skipper Kavishka Anjula won the toss and asked the visitors to take the first lease of the wicket. The left-arm spin twins, Asel Sigera and Dileepa Jayalath took three wickets apiece as Mahinda College was bowled out for 131 in 66 overs. Kavindu Ediriweera made a fighting 35 while K.Kevin stroked an unbeaten 33.

In reply, Ananda College equaled their opponent’s score for the loss of 5 wickets with their skipper Anjula batting unbeaten on 31.

Thurstan College vs Dharmapala College

Vice-captain Nipun Lakshan grabbed a five-wicket haul as Thurstan College dominated proceedings on day one in their under 19 division 1 cricket encounter against Dharmapala College, Pannipitiya in Pannipitiya.

After being asked to bat first, the bruised Palians once again failed with the bat as they were bundled out for just 118 runs. Mahima Weerakoon top scored with 39 while Gimhan Perera made 25. Lakshan gave away just 33 runs for his 5 wickets and was duly assisted by off-spinner Thushal Madusanka who grabbed 2 wickets.

Right-handed Prageesha Mendis made an unbeaten 72 alongside last year’s skipper Charana Nanayakkara who chipped in with 27 while Sawan Prabash and skipper Kasun Abeyrathne made 58 and 41 respectively.

Dharmapala College – 118 all out in 40.3 overs: Mahima Weerakoon 39, Gimhan Perera 25, Nipuna Lakshan 5/33, Thushal Madushanka 2/24.

Thurstan College – 205/2 in 52 overs: Prageesha Mendis 72*, Sawan Prabash 58, Kasun Abeyrathne 41, Charana Nanayakkara 27*.
