Sri Lanka’s stand-in Test Captain Dimuth Karunaratne who was arrested in the early hours on Sunday, the 31st of March, for a drunk driving accident, is set to be charged with two offences at the Hultfsdorp courts tomorrow(01), while Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is also set to take action against him.

According to authoritative police sources, Karunaratne who has been released on police bail, is set to be charged for driving under the influence of alcohol and for ignoring the traffic light which signalled red at the time of the accident.
The accident occurred at around 5:15 am when a red Range Rover driven by Karunaratne had passed through Ward Place while ignoring the traffic signal and had subsequently crashed onto a black three-wheeler which was travelling from the Borella cemetery.
According to hospital sources, the driver of the three-wheeler who sustained multiple minor injuries from the accident, is currently receiving treatment at the Colombo General Hospital.

In the meantime, SLC will also follow the due process as per his ‘Player Contractual Obligation’ with the organization and conduct an inquiry in order to take necessary action.
Karunaratne who is in the frame to lead Sri Lanka at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 in England, led the island nation to a historic 2-0 Test series win over South Africa in South Africa earlier this year.
