DIlshan Gunawardena and Mihilya Methsarani clinched the Men’s Open and Women’s Open titles respectively at the SSC open Squash Championships.
The National Ranking tournament conducted by the Srl Lanka Squash Federation was held at SSC Squash Complex from 7th to 14th of September.
The Men’s open final saw top seed Dilshan Gunawardena taking on bottom seed Ravindu Laksiri . Top seed Dilshan was keen to clinch the championship after losing last year’s SSC Open final in a tightly contested five setter. Dilshan took control of the game from the beginning and extended the lead till 4-0 before Ravindu could score his first point. The first set ended with the scores reading 11/5 in favor of Dilshan. However Ravindu fought back strongly in the second game though he lost the game 11/9.Ravindu’s efforts paid off as he grabbed the third set at 11/7 after catching up from 4/6.The match ended in a four setter when Dilshan took the 4th set at 11/6 clinching his second Men’s Open Championship.
The Women’s Open final was a one sided affair where Mihiliya Methsarani beat Naduni Gunawardena in straight sets. Mihiliya who was playing her first domestic tournament after her triumph at the Youth Asian games took the upper hand of the game from the start and continued the trend to finish things in grand style. The finals scores read 11/6, 11/6, 11/1 in Mihiliya’s favor.
Mihiliya grabbed a double when she repeated the same performance in the U-19 Girls finals when she beat the same opponent in straight sets with the scores reading 11/4, 11/1, 11/5.
In the Boy’s U-19 final Ravindu Laksiri beat Lakitha Senanayake in straight sets with the final scores of 11/4,11/2,11/4.
Shamil Wakeel won the Boy’s U-17 event while Fathoum Issadeen who won the Girl’s U- 17 event also grabbed the third place in the Womens Open event.
Young upcoming players Devmini Gallage and Chanithma Sinaly qualified for two finals .Devmini won the Girls U-11 final after losing the Girls U-13 final to Sameera Deen. Chanithma won the Girls U-09 event and lost the Girls U-11 event to Devmini .
