Army SC’s Dilan Udayanga faces a possible one year ban after being sent off for using foul language on the referee in the recently concluded Dialog Champions League Super 8 encounter against Air Force at the Race Course International Stadium.
The incident happened in the 67th minute when Army was awarded a free kick after D.K.Duminda fouled Udayanga in the air. Udayanga initially placed the ball further ahead of the pitch but referee Buddhika Dias ordered him to place it back a few feet behind.
Udayanga, for the second time failed to adhere to the referees call and when the referee asked again Udayanga retorted with what seemed like foul language, which gave referee Dias no option but to dish out a second yellow card, in addition to the one he received in the first half and consequently the red card.
Air Force went onto take the lead but Army salvaged a point with the equalizer with the last kick of the game.
A similar incident happened a few months ago in the 2016 FA Cup final where Renown SC’s Francis Agbeti was red carded for the same kind of offense and the disciplinary committee banned Francis for one year.
In that occasion the benefiting party was Army SC who went on to win the final 3-1.
The disciplinary committee is expected to be tough on offenses such as the above, which is a good example, though the lengths of the bans are a question.
ThePapare.com’s attempts to get an official word on the matter proved futile as none of the committee members were available for comment.
