The much awaited return of the Dialog Champions League is here, as the 2nd week of Super 8 action will commence this week on the 6th of January.
The first week’s action took place as early as September of 2016, however due to international duties at the AFC Solidarity Cup the Football Federation of Sri Lanka decided to postpone the remainder of the tournament to the month of November, as many clubs who were contesting in the Super 8’s conveyed their displeasure to continue with the remainder of the Super 8 ties up until their players who were on nation duty were released.
However, the weather gods had little mercy as the torrential rains ensured not a ball was kicked. Ones again due to the inconsistency caused due to the showers, the FFSL intervened and pushed the tournament further into the New Year as the dates were finalized to January.
Week 1 Round-Up
Solid SC issued the biggest statement of week one of the Super 8’s as they handed an absolute mauling to Navy SC. The former champions were ruthless against the Sailors as they dismantled their lackluster defense.
The reigning FA Cup champions Army SC showed depth and spirit as they came from a man short and a goal down to steal a point off Air Force SC earlier.
New Youngs FC held the defending champions Colombo FC in a spirited performance to record their first points of the Super 8’s.
The biggest surprise of week 1 came at the hands of Blue Star SC as they shocked tournament favorites Renown SC in an end to end tussle. The men from the south showed excellent character as veteran ace E.B. Channa came to the party in the nick of time with a man of the match performance for Blue Star.
The stage is set for a swash-buckling week of action as the tournament big boys have their work cut out amidst some stiff competition up ahead. Solid SC along with Blue Star SC would love to capitalize on their early momentum despite the lengthy layoff from action.
