Dialog A and Access ended victorious in the only cup segment games of the Mercantile sevens as the 2018 edition began today (7/20) at the Racecourse International Stadium.
Access – comprising of 10 Sri Lanka seven’s players – breezed past Classic Travels as 2017’s runners up got off to a winning start of 42 to nil, without conceding a point.
Meanwhile, Dialog ‘A’ got the better of a star studded JKH ‘B’ outfit. The John Keells lads were starved of possession, as the much fancied Dialog lads posted 31 points, holding the opposition scoreless.

17 Shield segment games, got under way at 1pm as Dialog ‘B’ dispatched Aitken Spence 38-05 earlier on in the day.
Ceylon Tobacco, PABC and Fairfirst Insurance were easy winners in the first few Shield segment games, while Softlogic were pushed by the Ceylon Tea Brokers, however, Softlogic managed to get over the line by 2-points in a closely fought battle.
Fairfirst Insurance, however, were penalized for fielding two club players in the Shield segment, in which only one is eligible as the Insurance group were disqualified from the tournament in unfortunate fashion.

Meanwhile, CDB got the better out of Brandix, winning 33-14, while, Allianz Insurance surprisingly got the better out of JKH ‘C’ 12-07, in the only two Bowl segment games to be played on the first day.

Day two of the Mercantile sevens will begin tomorrow (7/21) from 8.40 am onwards and will go on till 9pm as 31 games are scheduled to take place.
