Dharmaraja and Wesley Announce Title Hopes but Peters Still on Top

181

St Peter’s remain on top of week 2’s points table thanks to a convincing win against traditional rivals St Joseph’s in the Weerathunga Shield encounter. Dharmaraja, Wesley and Trinity creep up the ladder after convincing wins.

DCK and Wesley really kept their title hopes alive despite being recently promoted to the big league. On the other side of the spectrum defending champs, Isipathana, find themselves in the bottom three after their worst start in several seasons along with St Anthony’s and Kingswood who also have two loses in two games.

After two weeks of rugby Trinity, St Peter’s, Dharmaraja and Wesley seem to be the teams to watch out for at this early stage.

Schools rugby will take a break this weekend due to the Asian 5 Nations Division 1 been hosted at Havelock Park on the 31st March, 3rd and 6th April. This will give some teams time to regroup and re-strategies before the league recommences.

Week 2 recap

Royal hold off Kingwood at home (RC 13 KCK 07)

Royall College managed to register their first win this season versus Kingswood at Royal Complex. But anybody who was there would vouch that the rugby dished out at match was certainly not the best and was really disappointing considering the rich rugby history of these two schools. Ball handling was just poor from both teams with neither team capitalizing on the other’s mistakes.

Wesley continues strong start (WC 32 SACK 17)

Wesley proved that last week’s win against Isipathana was no fluke by beating St Anthony’s but they did have to navigate some anxious moments when they saw themselves trailing at lemons 10-17. But a resurgent team was seen in the second half as they managed to score 22 unanswered points to win 32-17. The Double Blues once again proved they’re one of the dark horses in this year’s competition.

Joes hoodoo remains (SPC 43 SJC 15)

St Joseph’s have not won the rugby encounter in 13 years and they will need to look to next year to break the hoodoo. Despite going in all guns blazing in the first half and leading for much of the first 50 minutes the Josephians were not able to keep the Peterite offense at bay for long. SPC were able to score 28 points in the later stages of the game without much effort.

Trinity pass the Science Test (TCK 18 SC 11)

Having lost their previous meeting at Mount in 2011 Trinity would have gone in to this game wary of what Science in capable of. But the Lions managed to defeat their demons to register a solid performance.

Rajans shock the defending champs (DCK 32 IC 08)

Newly promoted Dharmaraja provided defending champs Isipathana a shock when they played in Kandy. The Rajan were quick on their feet and outplayed the green shirts in both in set plays and loose plays. Dharmaraja announced themselves as real title contenders this year with this splendid victory. Skipper Hettiarchchi and Wijesinghe are proving to be an effective pair for the Rajans.
