Defending champions De Mazenod College, Kandana topped Group B standings and qualified for the final of the 14th Henry Senaratne Memorial Volleyball Tournament.

Nalanda College, Colombo was placed second and will take part in the 3rd place play-offs.

With the first day proceedings which were scheduled to be held on the 6th of November being washed away by the rain, the 14th Henry Senaratne Memorial Volleyball Tournament started off today (12th Nov) with the Group B matches being played out.

The group champions decider was between the hosts De Mazenod and Nalanda College where both teams had won their previous matches and competed for the top place in a full 5 set match.

With their high attackers and Captain Dilakshana Deshan putting up a dominating display, it was the hosts who clean swept the match, winning all 3 sets comprehensively.

Although Nalanda gave a close fight in the 1st set they succumbed under the numerous spike shots and well delivered serves giving away the game 25-19, 25-14 & 25-18 respectively.

Earlier in the day De Mazenod defeated St.Anthony’s College, Wattala and Jayakody MV, Ganemulla 25-12, 25-09 and 25-06, 25-04 respectively.

Nalanda College on the other hand had a close call against Jayakody MV having lost the first set 16-25 but came back up strongly in an evenly contested match to win the next 2 sets 25-23 & 25-19 and grab the game.

They also faced a tough fight from St. Anthony’s as well but went on to win the game 25-18 & 25-22.

Having lost all their previous games, Jayakody MV and St.Anthony’s decided not to play the match against each other. Also Ananda College, Colombo and Rajasinghe MV, Colombo did not show up for the matches for unknown reasons, drastically reducing the number of teams and games.

The postponed Group A matches will be played out on the 15th of November and is sure to be an exciting spectacle featuring the likes of 2016 Western Province Champions Maris Stella College, Negombo, 2015 Henry Senaratne Memorial runners-up Rajasinghe MMV, Hanwella and Royal College, Colombo.
