Sri Lankan batter Danushka Gunathilaka has informed Sri Lanka Cricket of his decision to retire from Test Cricket with immediate effect, according to Newswire.

The left-hander is currently serving a 1-year ban from international cricket which was imposed on him in the wake of the Durham bio-bubble breach saga last year. He will be eligible to return to international cricket in June this year.

Gunathilaka has said that he is taking this decision in order to stay focused on his fitness levels for the shorter formats of the game.

The southpaw has mentioned that he still hopes to continue international and domestic white-ball cricket.

“It has always been an honour to play for my country and I hope to contribute to the best of my ability in the future by continuing to represent Sri Lanka whenever I am called upon to do so.” – Danushka Gunathilaka told Newswire.

Gunathilaka has made 8 appearances in Test Cricket, making 597 runs at an average of 18.68. His last appearance in the format was back in December 2018.
