Rajan’s skipper, Bawantha Udangamuwa failed to find 10 meters from the kick-off, giving the Dons the upper hand right from the start. The first ten minutes of the game saw both teams showing a great sense of urgency, which resulted in unforced errors and heaps of penalties being leaked.

The Rajans’ had the opportunity to draw first blood in the 4th minute when they won a penalty under the post, but unfortunately the kick drifted away, along with the Rajans momentum. However, sensing the opportunity, DS immediately capitalized on their opposition’s mistakes and began their dominance.

Danger man Dinusha Hemasiri, opened the scoring for DS when he touched down in the far corner after collecting a pass taken off a quick tap 5 meters away from the try line. However, momentum swung the Rajans way after fly-half Ranaweerasingha, intercepted the ball and made a dashing run inside the Dons ’22 from inside the halfway line. After a few pick and goes from the  breakdown, Malintha Rajapaksha planted the ball slightly away from the uprights scoring Dharmaraja’s first try. Both teams failed to add the extras, making the scores level. (DS 05 – 05 DCK)

The lone warrior. Dinusha Hemasiri (R) has been the backbone in this D. S. team and once again came up with a top performance

Hemasiri went on to score his second try in the 22nd minute after bouncing off two defenders, finishing an attacking move that started in the visitors half. Five minutes before lemons, Skipper Chamuka Sheshan, extended his team’s lead after going over the whitewash from the back of a driving DS maul, putting his team in a comfortable position just before the break. However, making things worse for the Rajans’, centre Pathirana, scored an easy bonus point try under the post after slicing through the gap in the defensive line. Two of the three tries were converted successfully as the Dons maintained a healthy lead at half-time.

Half Time : DS 24 – 05 DCK

The second half got under way as the Dons once again managed to exploit the wounded Rajan defence scoring two tries in quick succession. Skipper Sheshan, went over for his second try in the 47th minute after barging his way over the whitewash just 5 minutes after his centre, Fernando, scored the opening try of the final half. Hemasiri added the extras with his boot making valuable contributions to his side. ( DS 38 – 05 DCK)

Dharmaraja played their hearts out in the dying minutes of the game, but it was a little too late to make a comeback. However, as a result of their hardwork, replacement winger, Rajarathna scored an outstanding try as he sprinted his way over 80 meters to score the Rajan’s consolation try.

Many opportunities went begging for Dharmaraja as their handling errors and miscommunication let them down. DS on the other hand, will be pumped up with their win and be threatening to any opposition in the coming weeks.
