The CR & FC Centenary Sevens 2023 got underway on Friday (31st). Yesterday was Match day 2, where CR & FC and CH & FC went unbeaten at the end of the group stage at Longdon Place.
Ceylonese Rugby & Football Club, celebrating its centenary, hosted the first-ever Sevens Tournament, bringing together Men’s, Women’s and School teams in an exciting 3-day Rugby spectacle. The School segment started on Friday, while the Men’s and Women’s Club segments started today (1).
Hosts CR & FC went unbeaten after the first round of play. Their first game was a nail-biter, with Army SC coming back at the last minute to finish the game 19-19.
The Reds faced Kandy SC in their next game, and it was the hosts who saw off Kandy SC. The final score was 21-19.
In the last game of the day, CR beat Police easily by 17-0.
In Group A, Kandy finished second after defeating both Police SC (36-0) and Army SC (31-5). Army SC finished third after they tied their game against CR and beat Police SC 24-7.
CH and FC won all three Group B games. They first defeated Air Force SC 27-5. Their best performance was against Havelocks SC where they won 36-5. To cap off a great day on the field, the Maitland Crescent boys defeated Navy SC 36-0.
Havelock SC finished second in Group B after defeating both Navy SC (24-12) and Air Force SC (21-12).
BWRC Australia leads the Women’s table with two wins and one draw. In the first game, Army SC women’s managed a late try to draw against the Australian team (19-19). The team from Australia beat the CR & FC women’s 41-0, and Doha RFC 31-0.
The Army SC Women’s team finished second with wins over Air Force SC (43-0) and Navy SC (26-0).
The two remaining rounds of the Women’s segment will take place on Sunday, along with the knockout rounds in all three segments.
