As the heat of the Commonwealth Games fades away the Sri Lankan Weightlifting and Boxing teams returned to the island victorious.
The medal winners were felicitated by newly appointed Minister of Sports Mr. Faizal Mustapha and his predecessor Mr. Dayasiri Jayasekara earlier today at the Sports Ministry.
All six medalists received their cash awards while the Minister of Sports promised the coaches that they too will receive their rewards in the near future.
“All we did was provide the participants with the nutrients, support and the facilities for their participation, we don’t need the recognition or the tag that we are taking the credit for the success of the Commonwealth glory” stated the former Minister of Sports Dayasiri Jayasekara said in his speech while also taking the opportunity to officially give his final words of departure from his former office.
Minister Faisal Mustapha expressed that he intends to continue the good progress made in the field of sports by the former administration.
Sri Lanka sent a team of 11 Weightlifters to the Commonwealth Games – 7 Male and 4 female athletes. The Weightlifters managed to acquire 3 medals out of the 6 medals Sri Lanka has currently, which is also the biggest medal haul for the Island nation in the history of the Commonwealth Games. The Sri Lanka Boxing Team has been in top form in the recent past bringing home three more medals that were added to the tally to make it 6 medals in total from the games.
