Sri Lanka’s champion quarter-miler Kalinga Kumarage participated in the Men’s 400m Heats at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham earlier today (3).

Kumarage competed in heat number 1 and was placed 4th with a timing of 46.53s. He was denied an automatic qualification spot by Namibian athlete Ivan Geldenhuys who dipped at the finishing line to clinch the 3rd position by just 0.02s.

However, Kumarage managed to qualify for the semifinals of the event as the fastest non-automatic qualifier. The top three athletes of each heat (7 heats) progressed to the semifinal stage along with the the 3 next fastest athletes.

The semifinal of the event will be worked off on 6th August at 1.30 am Sri Lanka time. If Kumarage is to make the finals, he will probably have to produce a timing close to his personal best which is 45.73s.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan speedster Yupun Abeykoon will be competing in his 100m semifinal today at 11.56 pm (SL time).
