CWG18; Semi final finish for Matthew in 50m

The Sri Lankan swimming prodigy, Matthew Abeysinghe bowed out of the Commonwealth Games after finishing 8th in the Men’s 50m Freestyle semi final 2, which took place at the Optus Aquatic Centre in the Gold Coast.

Representing the country in his final event at the 21st Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Abeysinghe got his entry to the semi final after he clocked in 22.65 seconds in the heats renewing his national record in the process.

Unfortunately, the Lankan could not enjoy success in the semi final, finishing 8th with a timing of 22.84 seconds. England’s Benjamin Proud finished the semi final with a timing of 21.30 establishing a new games record.

With Abeysinghe concluding his run in the Gold Coast games, that will mark the conclusion of the swimming events for Sri Lanka.

Earlier in the day …

In their last shot at a medal, Matthew Abeysinghe, Kyle Abeysinghe and Cherantha De Silva swam the heats in the 50m Freestyle event of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games a short while ago.

Kyle Abeysinghe took to waters first out of the lot in heat 5. Young Abeysinghe carrying a seasons best of 23.38, managed to finish with a split time of 23.73 seconds. He finished 4th behind Malaysia, Ghana and Mozambique respectively.

In heat 7 was Matthew Abeysinghe swimming his last event with a seasons best timing of 22.28 seconds. Mirroring his brother Kyle, Abeysinghe finished 4th in his heat with a timing of 22.65.

Cherantha De Silva swam the final heat with his seasons best being at 23.05 seconds. Unfortunately, Cherantha could only finish 8th and last in the heat with a split timing of 24.29 seconds.

Matthew Abeysinghe was the only one of the three to qualify for the semifinal and will compete this evening 4:12pm local time.
