Commonwealth Games 2014 : Sirisena shines for Sri Lanka

National table tennis champion Roshan Sirisena made his way to the next stage of the men’s singles table tennis event of Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014 when he defeated S. Tomlinson of Jamaica four sets to one here in Scotland yesterday.

Meanwhile, the other Sri Lankan who took part in the first stage match, Udaya Ranasinghe was beaten by Canada’s A. Ho four sets to two. C. Fernando and H. Piyumala were also defeated in the women’s doubles by the Guernsey pair three sets to one.

Sri Lankan wrestler, Chamara Perera recorded a victory in the pre quarter finals of the men’s 65kg event when he won by fall against A Rogers of Sierra Leone. However his fellow countryman Lasitha Ekanayake was handed a defeat by the Pakistan’s M Inam in the men’s 85kg pre quarter final.

The Sri Lankan mixed doubles squash pair, Ravindul Laksiri and Naduni Gunawardene also failed to qualify for the next round losing out their first stage match to Canadian duo S Diliere and S Cornett two sets to nil.

Nadeesha Murukkuwadura was also beaten in the women’s singles badminton round of 16 by the Malaysian shuttler JY Tee two sets to nil while Diluka Karunaratne was defeated in the men’s singles pre quarters by Malaysia’s D Liew two sets to nil.
