The Colombo Rowing Club left the Island last evening with the aim of dominating the 76th Amateur Rowing Association of the East & Far East Amateur Rowing Association (ARAE FEARA) Regatta which is to be held in Calcutta on 10th – 12th January.
The Colombo Rowing club is set to make their mark at the ARAE FEARA Regatta 2018 which will commence on the 10th of January till the 12th at Rabindra Sarobar, Calcutta. The team consists of 9 crew members this year and will be led by senior Oarsman, Ruven Weerasinghe.
The ARAE FEARA Regatta is an annual rowing tournament that compromises of clubs which mainly belong to the countries of the South-East Asian region – namely, Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan. But Clubs and Institutions from Dubai and Hong-Kong are often seen participating in this tournament as well.
A crew of 18 members represented the Colombo Rowing club at the 75th ARAE FEARA Regatta in Madras last year, and the Lankan club emerged Overall Champions in both the Men’s and Women’s categories.
Hashen Weerakkody and Suhith Alexender won the Men’s sculls ‘B’ and Men’s sculls ‘A’ races respectively. Ruven Weerasinghe and Sajeev de Silva won the Men’s sculls pair ‘B’ , Lasaru Kudaligama and Hashen Weerakkody won the men’s double sculls ‘B’, Suhith Alexnder and Saliya Gunasekara won the Men’s double sculls ‘A’. Finally, Lasaru Kudeligama, Praveen Hapugalle, Suramba Serasinghe, Saliya Gunasekara and Kaveen Rajapakse won the Men’s fours ‘A’ race event, which contributed to the 30 points that led the Colombo Rowing Club to their Overall Championship in the Men’s Category.
The Colombo Rowing Club accumulated a total of 19 points in the Women’s category as Samaakhya Gajanayake won the Women’s sculls and the team of Davina Koch, Nihara Waravita, Ashivini Subasinghe and Ishara Abbey won the Women’s fours.
When asked about the preparation for this Regatta, Captain Ruven Weerasinghe added these words,
“The team is prepared as we’ve been training for over a couple of months now, all the athletes have reached a higher stage”
The Colombo Rowing Club has always fared well at the ARAE Regatta, specially the Women’s team who have managed to whitewash the other teams for three consecutive years.
