Blue Star v Colombo FC ends with referee assault
Ugly scenes marred the Blue Star vs Colombo FC Dialog Champions League 2018 …
Negombo Youth has had a miserable season so far, languishing a place above bottom, with two-points from six matches. Colombo FC on the other hand were on cruise mode winning all four of their matches scoring 17 goals and only conceding three.
Colombo’s nightmare started as early as the 2nd minute. Dilan Kaushalya was shown a straight red, by referee Nivon Robesh, after he struck Edward Abakah with an elbow as they were preparing for a corner.
Soon after going down to 10-men, matters got worse for the defending champions after Mohamed Siraj fouled Priyankara Silva inside the box. Christeen Fernando calmly rolled the ball into the net from the spot after sending the Kaveesh Fernando the wrong way.
Bright Eshun scuffed a chance for Negombo, shooting straight at Kaveesh, after getting on the end of a through ball while the men in yellow barely threatened the goal on the other end.
Chalana Chameera missed a high ball, trying to control, as Norbert Chibuzor raced through running 40meters to slot the ball into the net making it 2-0, as the Colombo faithful looked on in disbelief.

Zarwan Johar, who replaced Crebo Rehoboth inside 20 minutes, hit a long-range effort straight at Chinthaka Sujeewa while Bodri Dimitri had a point-blank range effort blocked by Madushka Peiris with the goalkeeper scrambling back on the stroke of half time.

Chibuzor had a volley saved by the outstretched hands of Kaveesh early in the 2nd half but it was Colombo who started brightly.
Sujeewa was forced into a brilliant diving save by Dimitri, after a neat one-two between Zarwan and the latter hit a curling low free-kick testing the goalkeeper. On the opposite end, Bright Eshun had a goal disallowed for off-side.

Dimitri missed a host of chances, which for a player of his reputation could score with ease on any other day. Madushka once again blocked his shot from inside the penalty box, and flashed another over after chesting down a Mohamed Fazal cross.
Mohamed Rifnaz placed an effort just wide of the post while Charitha Rathnayake fired over a rebound from a free-kick. Rifnaz had another effort saved and Madushka acrobatically cleared the ball, which was headed towards the goal, after a goal mouth scramble.

Substitute Momas Yapo then had two opportunities denied, one where his indecision allowed the defense to clear with the goal at his mercy and the other a disallowed goal for handball.
Thus, ended a game where Colombo would find a way to miss, even with an open goal. Credit should be given to Negombo Youth who took advantage of their chances, stuck to their tasks and did not get complacent with the two-goal cushion.
